Schiller, Anthony Mark

September 5, 1949 - May 5, 2016

Tribute

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mark Schiller after an eight and a half year battle with cancer. He is survived by his loving wife and soulmate Donna (Aldred), mother Norma, sister Betty (Brown), and brother Steven. He was predeceased by his father Anthony. Mark is already terribly missed by his family and friends but we know that he is finally at peace, safe in the arms of Jesus. Mark was born in Vancouver, and grew up in Burnaby. He received his teaching degree from Simon Fraser University while working for CN, first as a coach cleaner and then as a carman. He later received his Master’s degree from the University of British Columbia. Mark put his skills to work serving the students in the Interior of BC for thirty years in many different capacities. A lifelong learner, once retiring from public education, Mark earned his TESL certificate through Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops. He taught English language learners there for several terms before his health forced him into permanent retirement. During this time he also volunteered with CancerConnection, supporting others with a cancer diagnosis. Mark loved sports, nature, travel, walking, was an avid reader and never lost his love of trains. He touched many lives and will always be remembered as a positive, kind and gentle soul with a keen sense of humour. A special thanks to all of the wonderful doctors, nurses, technicians and other support staff that we met along Mark’s cancer journey. The family is especially grateful for the loving care he received at Cascade Hospice in Chilliwack, where he spent his last few days. Mark had asked that there be no service of any kind for his remains. However, those wishing to honour Mark’s passing could consider a donation to Canuck Place Children’s Hospice, or other charity of your choice.

I’m sitting in my apartment hotel in Kraków and thinking how much time has passed since our last get together-probably at dinner at the Keg prior to the Blazers game. We’d make a bet and usually you’d be just a little better. But it was fun and we’d laugh and look forward to the next match. But things change. You did move and our emails were infrequent but you were not forgotten. But you are private. So yesterday I was at a crematorium at Auschwitz. And I thought of all those lost lives and lost souls. And as a refugee from this historical era of hate and violence and cruelty, I am so happy that we crossed paths. In leadership you lead with a firm but gentle hand for the students and staff in your charge. Your personal philosophy was that of taking the high road and helping others to search out that path. Your life has had a positive meaning and impact on so many. So indeed it is not a goodbye but now a more profound meaning to me as to the significance of your life and the good you gave and the hope for a better future that you left for us to emulate. There is much to rue and regret in a harsh and insensitive world. Your life and your leadership was the perfect balance for many. Thank you for your legacy of gentle kindness and for the unconditional love of those less fortunate and in need. My bet Mark, is that you will be alive and well with so many of us and in so many ways. We thank you.

Dear Donna and all your families,
I am sorry to hear of our wonderful Mr. Schiller’s passing. He is so fondly remembered by all of his students. His lasting legacy, besides his humour, would be the lessons he instilled in us that we always had a choice. I’m happy to know he chose peace.
He will always be in my heart, and you in my thoughts.
Much, much love, Loni and and family

My most sincere regrets to all family members and friends of Mark. Mark had a tremendously positive effect on my career in education and mentored me through the difficult early first years of teaching. We had so many enjoyable sports related conversations which I shall miss. Only the good die young.

Sending my deepest condolences to Mr. Schiller’s family. I am shocked and saddened by this news. Mr. Schiller was such a gentle, kind soul and an incredible teacher. He taught in Spences Bridge for many years and then again in Ashcroft. He had a smile for everyone and made all of his students feel special. Rest in peace. Carma Murphy and family

Donna, I am so sad and shocked upon hearing of Mark’s death. I loved his quiet, gentle manner with that little smile. He was able to see both sides of any issue and could negotiate an acceptable solution. I am thinking of you with a heavy heart.
