I’m sitting in my apartment hotel in Kraków and thinking how much time has passed since our last get together-probably at dinner at the Keg prior to the Blazers game. We’d make a bet and usually you’d be just a little better. But it was fun and we’d laugh and look forward to the next match. But things change. You did move and our emails were infrequent but you were not forgotten. But you are private. So yesterday I was at a crematorium at Auschwitz. And I thought of all those lost lives and lost souls. And as a refugee from this historical era of hate and violence and cruelty, I am so happy that we crossed paths. In leadership you lead with a firm but gentle hand for the students and staff in your charge. Your personal philosophy was that of taking the high road and helping others to search out that path. Your life has had a positive meaning and impact on so many. So indeed it is not a goodbye but now a more profound meaning to me as to the significance of your life and the good you gave and the hope for a better future that you left for us to emulate. There is much to rue and regret in a harsh and insensitive world. Your life and your leadership was the perfect balance for many. Thank you for your legacy of gentle kindness and for the unconditional love of those less fortunate and in need. My bet Mark, is that you will be alive and well with so many of us and in so many ways. We thank you.

I am sorry to hear of our wonderful Mr. Schiller’s passing. He is so fondly remembered by all of his students. His lasting legacy, besides his humour, would be the lessons he instilled in us that we always had a choice. I’m happy to know he chose peace.
